The lake Ammersee has a surface area of approximately 47 square kilometres (18 sq mi) which makes it to the sixth largest lake in Germany. The lake is located in the southwest of Munich, the Bavarian capital at an elevation of 520 metres (1,700 ft). The lake Ammersee has a maximum depth of 81 metres (270 ft), a lenght of 16 kilometers (52300 ft) and a maximum width of 6 kilometers (20000 ft). Like the lake Starnberger See / lake starnberg, the lake Ammersee developed as a result of the melting of the ice age glaciers.

With the suburban train (to Herrsching am Ammersee) or the car (highway A96) you need a little more than half an hour from the center of Munich to the lake Ammersee.

The lake Ammersee is fed in the South by the River Ammer which flows as Amper out of the North of the lake. Like neighbouring Lake Starnberg, which is similar in size and shape, the lake Ammersee is a popular location for watersports and leisure time.
